Schmidt’s Spotlight: Budget, State Issues, and More

Illinois stands at a real financial and political crossroads as the state budget is voted on next week. The irresponsible budget practice by the majority party is the reason we are facing a $3.2 billion deficit. The bottom line is we need to cut taxes and cut reckless spending to get our state moving in the right direction so families and businesses can thrive. I will keep you updated on legislation as it moves through the House next week.

We are back in Springfield next week to wrap-up the spring legislative session. We only have four scheduled session days left before our May 31 adjournment date and the deadline to pass a state budget. We have yet to see a budget proposal from our Democrat colleagues. On top of that, the Governor’s Office of Management and Budget lowered revenue projections for FY26 by more than $500 million last week. House Republicans will continue to stand for fiscal sanity. We will not negotiate a budget with ANY tax hikes.

Rep. Schmidt Donates Pay Raise for May to a Freeburg Food Pantry

Freeburg, IL…State Representative Kevin Schmidt (R-Millstadt) donated his pay raise for the month of May to Hope Christian Church’s Food Pantry in Freeburg. Since taking office, Rep. Schmidt has donated every month’s pay raise to a different local food pantry or non-profit organization throughout his district since voting against the pay raise for legislators.

“Hope Christian Church does an excellent job giving back to the community, and I’m happy to contribute to their food pantry,” said Rep. Schmidt. “Too many times, politicians make empty promises. I’m staying true to my commitment and look forward to continuing this monthly donation.”

Hope Christian Church’s Food Pantry has been helping the community since 2020. To make a donation, call 618-710-0004 or donate online at hopefreeburg.com.

Illegal Immigration Costing Taxpayers

Under the Pritzker administration, more than $3 billion has been spent on services for migrants and illegal immigrants, while services for our most vulnerable citizens remain chronically underfunded and underserved. Democrats’ sanctuary state policy has cost Illinois taxpayers billions and made our communities less safe. House Republicans continue to fight for immigration reform and a state budget that prioritizes the needs of Illinois working families and seniors over illegal immigrants.

Education

Spending on education is up in Illinois, but unfortunately, our students are still underperforming. We need to make sure resources are being used wisely to secure the best educational outcomes for our children. Illinois students and families deserve real solutions.

Since 2018, Country Mart has provided the community with affordable prices on groceries and excellent customer service. Understanding the Importance of Bees and Other Pollinators

Starting now and going through late fall, gardens are beginning to reach their peak bloom. Warm weather coupled with busy bees (among other pollinators) are to thank for that.

A pollinator is anything that helps to carry pollen from the stamen to the pistil. While bees, some birds, and butterflies are the most recognized pollinators, they are not the only ones that contribute to the ecosystem…Read more.
