Schmidt’s Spotlight: News from this week

What a busy week! I really enjoyed meeting with constituents this week to have productive conversations on how we can work together to improve the quality of life for everyone in the 114th District. Not too much was accomplished this week in session and two days were cancelled, so we will be back in session beginning April 7, 2025.

Schmidt Supports his Constituents in the 114th District

I hade the privilege to meet with some amazing constituents who are making a difference in the community! I met with members from Community Development Sustainable Solutions to discuss parent mentor programs.

This organization has a paid parents program that places parents in classrooms after proper training to assist teachers with advancements to certifications as a “Prestige Professional.” This approach helps address teacher shortage and advances parents into educational careers.

I also had the pleasure to meet Miriah Boyd, from Cahokia Heights High School. She created the platform K.I.N.D (Keep Increasing Nice Deeds) to inspire kindness and support victims of bullying. She is also Miss Illinois Juneteenth Title Queen!

Coffey Talk- 3/24/25

Coffee Talk Event was filled with productive conversations about how we can improve communities across the 114th District.

I appreciate everyone taking the time to meet with me ! Your voice is heard and we will continue to work on finding solutions to state issues that impact families and businesses!

Schmidt Files Legislation to Waive Vehicle Registration Fees for Active-Duty Military Personnel

Springfield, IL…House Republicansback our military and veterans for their sacrifices to protect our great nation. State Representative Kevin Schmidt (R-Cahokia Heights) says there are many ways we can show respect to individuals who are active-duty in the military. House Bill 1125 was filed by Rep. Schmidt to say, “thank you for your service.”

“My bill is a small gesture to show appreciation to the men and women who are committed to serving the greatest nation on earth,” said Schmidt. “This legislation should have bipartisan support, and I look forward to see it move forward in committee so we can further honor those serving in the military.”

HB1125 amends the Illinois Vehicle Code. If passed and signed into law, the bill would eliminate vehicle registration fees (vehicle weighing not more than 8,000 pounds) for active-duty military personnel. The current law reduces registration fees, but Rep. Schmidt wants to see the fees completely waived.

IHSA Letter

On March 18th, 2025, the House Republican caucus sent a letter to the Illinois High School Association (IHSA) asking for the organization to detail how their policies and protocols for administering high school sports will be amended in line with President Donald J. Trump’s Executive Order which prohibits biological men from competing against biological women in sports. The IHSA has failed to respond.

Grand Opening of “Disabled American Veterans” in Freeburg

I joined Superintendent John Lawson and Mike Gomric from the Veterans Assistance Commission of St. Clair County to celebrate the grand opening of DAV (Disabled American Veterans) in Freeburg. In 2024, DAV helped more than 1 million of our heroes address their challenges in positive, life-changing ways.

This is a fantastic organization to strengthen the local community!

DAV’s free, professional assistance helps veterans and their families get the benefits they’ve earned. For more than 100 years, DAV has been a strong and influential advocate for veterans’ rights and benefits.
