Schmidt’s Spotlight: News from this week

There have been a lot of discussions about Illinois high school mascots, their names, and which ones are appropriate or not. Illinois school boards have been in control of making these decisions and they have done a great job.

My concerns are drawn to HB3527 which allows the state to decide which mascot names they deem to be inappropriate. This bill directly impacts my district, specifically the city of Freeburg, and is another example of the State of Illinois working to have more control over our schools.

Session

In celebration of Women’s History Month, I would like to take a moment to acknowledge Sandra Pegg from Millstadt, in the 114th District. Sandra has been an educational professional for over 20 years and is currently the principal at Millstadt Consolidated School District.

Rescuing farmers improved by grain bin extrication devices & training

Grain bins, towering symbols of agricultural prosperity, can, under certain conditions, become perilous. Entrapments occur when individuals become submerged in flowing grain, rendering self-rescue nearly impossible. The statistics are sobering: in 2023 alone, at least 27 grain entrapments were reported, resulting in 16 fatalities. Over the past decade, more than 300 such incidents have been documented, with experts estimating that an additional 30% go unreported. Alarmingly, in just four seconds, an adult can sink knee-deep in flowing grain, and within 20 seconds, they can be completely engulfed, leading to suffocation. Read more…

Springfield Office Meeting

This week, I met with Civic Leaders For Illinois Children. They advocate for better early childhood education programs by partnering with law enforcement, the military, and businesses.

I’m glad they took the time to visit my office in Springfield to have a productive meeting!

Corruption

Ex-Speaker Madigan’s sentencing has been scheduled for June 13 after he was found guilty on 10 counts of corruption earlier this year.

Democrats have rigged legislative elections by gerrymandering electoral districts to their benefit. Now they’ve recruited the “prince of darkness” to defend their illegal maps as they try to rob Illinois voters of a fair process. Learn more here…
