There have been a lot of discussions about Illinois high school mascots, their names, and which ones are appropriate or not. Illinois school boards have been in control of making these decisions and they have done a great job.
My concerns are drawn to HB3527 which allows the state to decide which mascot names they deem to be inappropriate. This bill directly impacts my district, specifically the city of Freeburg, and is another example of the State of Illinois working to have more control over our schools.
HB3527 will be heard in Education Policy Committee at 2:00pm today.
I will vote no on this bill because high school mascot names should be determined by local school boards, not politicians.
