State Representative Kevin Schmidt celebrated the 2024 Class 6A State Champion East St. Louis Flyers Football Team with certificates from Springfield and a pizza party. The Flyers rolled to a 48-28 victory over Geneva to capture the State Championship in November.
“I’m so proud of this team, who gives literal meaning to the ‘City of Champions,’ said Schmidt. “These high schoolers showed grit and determination, and deserved their win. I wanted to show them a little piece of appreciation with a certificate congratulating each member of the team and a pizza party.”
This is the Flyers 11th State Championship.
Schmidt also gave a special shoutout to Head Coach Darren Sunkett, who has been coaching in East St. Louis for 24 years. He was recently honored as the Chicago Bears 2024 High School Coach of the Year.
